Bread Zeppelin & Aburi Houston: A Caesar Salad Baguette and a Poke Bowl I Loved
A salad stuffed into a baguette didn’t sound that exciting to me at first. Then I tried Bread Zeppelin, and I understood it immediately. This food day also took me back to Aburi for a Hawaiian poke bowl that had already impressed me on an earlier lunch visit.
What I ordered
Bread Zeppelin’s Caesar salad baguette
I got the Caesar salad in a Zeppelin baguette as a combo with chips and a drink. They hollowed out the bread, toasted it and packed the salad inside. The result was light and super crunchy without feeling like too much bread.
The croutons inside added another layer of crunch, and the Caesar dressing was really good. I’m not usually a huge salad person, but this was something I wanted to keep eating.
Bread pudding
Matt from the restaurant offered me bread pudding to try. It came out warm and soft, and I loved it. He explained that the bread taken from inside the baguettes was used for the pudding, which made me like the idea even more.
Aburi’s Hawaiian poke don lunch
At Aburi, I ordered the Hawaiian poke don from the three-course lunch menu, which included a salad or soup and dessert. I chose the salad. The dressing tasted light and refreshing, and I honestly could have drunk it.
The poke bowl had a generous amount of fish compared with the rice. The fish tasted fresh without a fishy flavor, and I really enjoyed the fatty tuna pieces. The spicy ponzu was another sauce I wanted more of. This was the bowl that made me rethink what a good poke bowl could be.
How much was it?
- Bread Zeppelin combo: Around $13 for my salad baguette, chips and drink
- Hawaiian poke don bowl: $19
Those were the prices from my visit in August 2024. Check both restaurants’ current menus for pricing and lunch offerings.
What would I order again?
The Caesar Zeppelin and warm bread pudding, absolutely. At Aburi, I’d get the Hawaiian poke don again, with the salad and plenty of that spicy ponzu. Both stops gave me something I was excited to come back for.
