The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation: Houston’s Famous Fajitas

By · My firsthand restaurant visit

Before fajitas became a Tex-Mex staple, Mama Ninfa was serving grilled skirt steak in warm tortillas here on Navigation. I have lived in Houston my whole life and somehow had never been, so I finally went to see whether the fajitas that made this place famous were actually worth the hype.

From my video published October 3, 2026.

What I ordered

Wood Fire Grilled Beef Skirt Steak

We ordered the medium portion of the Wood Fire Grilled Beef Skirt Steak, and this was the winner. I am very picky about fajitas because the meat can be flavorful but still tough and chewy. These were outstanding: soft, buttery, moist, and flavorful, with a nice char outside and pink inside. The steak was honestly the softest fajita meat I have had at a restaurant. The house-made tortillas were fresh and light too, so I loaded mine with steak, onions, bell peppers, guacamole, pico, queso, and salsa. Put the queso and salsa together and you get fireworks. I would definitely get these fajitas again.

Jalapeno Rellenitos

I didn’t care for the Jalapeno Rellenitos. I also waited too long to eat them, so the cheese hardened up—that part was my fault. I would not get them again.

Chile Con Queso with chorizo

This queso was the bomb. It was creamy and cheesy without feeling overly heavy, and the chorizo added a little spice and richness without making it too oily. The chips were hot, crispy, and tasted freshly made, with a softer texture that reminded me of a pork rind. Ask for the spicy salsa too: it had a real kick, but it was manageable and full of tomato, cilantro, and onion flavor. I genuinely liked both the red and green sauces, which is rare for me at Tex-Mex places.

La Morita Mocktail

I almost ordered the Mockarita, but our waitress recommended the La Morita, so I listened. It had blackberries, mint, lime, and Topo Chico. The drink had a nice tang with acidity from the fruit, a little sweetness, and such a fresh mint flavor. It was beautiful and really refreshing with all the food.

Tres leches

We finished with the pina colada tres leches, and it was such a good ending to the meal. The cake was super moist, with pieces of pineapple and toasted almonds that brought a nutty crunch. I love tres leches, but a dry one is the worst; this one was not dry at all.

How much was it?

  • Wood Fire Grilled Beef Skirt Steak: $42
  • Jalapeno Rellenitos: $12
  • Chile Con Queso: $13, plus $3 for chorizo
  • La Morita Mocktail: $11

I forgot to check how much the tres leches was. Check the current Ninfa’s menu for up-to-date pricing before your visit.

My take

To be honest, I did not come in with high expectations, but I was taken back by how good the food was. The Wood Fire Grilled Beef Skirt Steak fajitas are absolutely what I would come back for. They were tender, charred, juicy, and packed with flavor, especially with the queso and salsa added in.
