Afuri Houston: Tonkotsu Ramen, Salmon Tacos & a Lunch Combo

By · My firsthand restaurant visit

I love ramen, especially the bowls I ate in Japan, so I was curious about Afuri in Houston. We arrived during lunch-combo hours and tried two different bowls, appetizers and drinks. My favorite bites weren’t all in the ramen bowl.

From my video published September 12, 2025.

What we ordered

Yuzu limeade and salmon tacos

The limeade had a strong yuzu flavor and a fizzy finish I liked. My salmon taco order came with two small tacos. They were crisp and refreshing, and the sauce was much lighter than I expected. Pickled vegetables added a nice tang. I enjoyed these more than I thought I would.

Spicy karaage

Thomas ordered the fried chicken side, and I tried it too. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, though less spicy than I expected. I’d ask for the sauce on the side next time to keep the coating crispier.

My tonkotsu ramen

The broth had a silky texture and a pleasant salty flavor. It wasn’t as creamy or milky as the style I usually crave, but I liked it more than I expected. The noodles were nicely al dente.

The pork had a good balance of fat and meat, though I wanted more flavor from it. I also wished the egg had more of the marinated flavor I remembered from Japan.

Thomas’s shio ramen

I tasted his clear broth and noticed a faint yuzu flavor. I like yuzu in a drink, but wasn’t sure I liked it as much in ramen. Of the two bowls, I preferred my tonkotsu.

How much was it?

  • My tonkotsu lunch combo: $22—ramen, a small plate and a drink.
  • Thomas’s lunch combo: $21.
  • We also ordered two beers.
  • Total stated in my video: $54.13.

These are visit-time prices. Confirm current menu prices and lunch-combo hours before going.

What would I choose again?

The salmon tacos and yuzu limeade stood out. If choosing between our ramen bowls, I’d pick the tonkotsu. My expectations were shaped by Japan, and I said in the video that without that comparison, I would call this a solid bowl of ramen.
