Southern Jerks Houston Review: Gas-Station Fried Chicken Worth Coming Back For

By · My firsthand restaurant visit

Gas-station fried chicken? I had questions too, y’all. Thomas found Southern Jerks through another YouTuber, and I was excited to see what the fuss was about. We ended up eating in the car, ordering extra chicken, and talking about coming back before we’d even finished.

What I ordered

We started with two five-piece chicken combos: one with collard greens and one with jerk dirty rice. We added macaroni and cheese and two dipping sauces. My chicken came with wings and drums, a jalapeño and a dinner roll. Later, we ordered another five-piece to share.

The jerk fried chicken

The crunch was unreal. The coating was substantial without tasting heavy or old, and the chicken was hot and juicy. I loved the seasoning so much that I didn’t want sauce—even though I normally have ketchup with fried chicken. In the video, I gave the chicken a 10/10.

The sauces were just okay, but the chicken on its own was the star. It didn’t need any sauce to complement it. The chicken flavor even reminded me of chicken nuggets I used to get in Chinatown at a place called Tapioca House. They have the same exact flavor and coating on top of the chicken.

Jerk dirty rice

I really enjoyed the spices in the rice. It had plenty of flavor and was a good side with the chicken.

Macaroni and cheese

Restaurant mac and cheese often disappoints me, but this one didn’t. It was so cheesy and delicious that I called it the best mac and cheese I’d had at any restaurant.

Collard greens

The greens had good seasoning and flavor. I enjoyed them too, though I kept wanting another piece of chicken.

How much was it?

  • 5-piece combo: $13.99 plus tax

The initial order totaled $38.24 for the two five-piece combos, extra mac and cheese and two sauces. We later added another five-piece, so $38.24 is not the final cost of everything we ate. The gas-station snacks and drinks were separate purchases.

Prices reflect the original visit. Check the current menu before ordering.

What would I order again?

The fried chicken, absolutely, with the mac and cheese high on my list too. I said I’d come back when I was craving fried chicken, and I returned for dinner the following week.
