Le Jardinier Houston: My Birthday Dinner, Octopus, Lamb & a Beautiful Dessert
I treated myself to Le Jardinier for my birthday because I wanted to try something different. The restaurant was so elegant that I felt a little out of place at first—I even caught myself using my left hand to eat when I’m right-handed. The meal was beautifully presented, with a dessert that ended the evening on a high note.
Le Jardinier Houston received one Michelin star in 2024, when the Michelin Guide made its Texas debut.
What I ordered
Bread service
I started with the complimentary bread. There were different shapes and textures, including a crisp piece and another with a nice cheesy flavor. I also liked the fragrance of the toasted nuts.
Grilled Spanish octopus
The presentation looked like art. The octopus was incredibly tender, with a nicely charred outside. It came with hummus, artichoke and chorizo, and the first few bites together were wonderful.
As I kept eating, the saltiness became more noticeable. I would have preferred less salt, but I still thought it was a very good appetizer, especially for that tender texture.
Roasted lamb
The lamb had salt and cracked pepper with a little of that characteristic lamb flavor. The plate also had sausage with a surprising bit of spice and leafy accompaniments.
Overall, I enjoyed it, but the sautéed leaves were much too salty for me. Both savory dishes would have suited my taste better with a lighter hand on the salt.
Dessert
The dessert arrived looking almost too pretty to touch, complete with an edible butterfly. I liked the refreshing, citrusy yuzu ice cream and its sour punch.
The mousse was delicate and decadent, and the raspberry sauce complemented it beautifully. This wasn’t just a pretty plate—it tasted really good, too. They also gave me a little complimentary cake for my birthday. Super small but packed with a good crunch and awesome way to end my meal.
How much was it?
I ordered the grilled Spanish octopus, roasted lamb and Butterfly dessert à la carte. The bread service was complimentary during my visit.
- The Butterfly dessert: $18 on the current menu.
- Grilled Spanish octopus: my grilled version is not on the current menu. For comparison, the restaurant now lists octopus carpaccio at $28; it’s a different preparation.
- Roasted lamb: no longer listed on the current menu. To help you budget, the current individual meat and fish dinner entrées run $46–$68, with a New York strip for two at $120.
The five-course seasonal menu is currently $195 per person.
Current menu checked September 22, 2026. These prices give an idea of today’s menu, not the bill from my birthday dinner. I couldn’t verify the prices of my original grilled octopus and lamb. View Le Jardinier’s menu.
What would I order again?
Dessert would be high on my list. For another visit, I’d be interested in the five-course menu so I could try a wider range of dishes. The octopus’s tenderness was memorable, but I’d want the savory food less salty for my taste.
