Sushi Hachi Houston: My $30 Lunch Plan Turned Into a Sushi Feast
I found Sushi Hachi while looking for sushi in Houston. The pictures looked beautiful, but the dinner prices made me pause. Then I saw the lunch menu and thought I had a plan: try the restaurant for about $30. Once we started eating, that plan changed.
From my video published June 29, 2025.
What I tried
The seven-piece nigiri lunch
I ordered seven pieces of nigiri with a spicy yellowtail roll. The lunch also included miso soup, salad and vegetable tempura. I liked the little mushrooms in the soup, and the tempura kept the vegetables’ texture beneath the crisp coating. The mushroom tempura was my favorite.
The nigiri pieces were small, beautiful bites. The rice held together without being mushy, and the fish was silky and flavorful. Each piece came with its own seasoning or topping, so I didn’t need extra soy sauce. I especially loved the brightness of the citrus zest and the little touches of salt.
More nigiri, salmon and engawa
We kept ordering and tried a larger nigiri selection. The salmon was my favorite bite: luscious, silky and full of flavor, with a sauce that brought it all together. The engawa was my second favorite, with a rich, light texture and some seared edges.
I enjoyed the fatty tuna too. The scallop was good, but after that salmon, it was hard for the next piece to compete!
The roll and extra dishes
The spicy yellowtail roll wasn’t my favorite. The minced fish didn’t give me the texture I enjoy from a whole piece of fish. It didn’t taste fishy; it simply wasn’t the style I preferred.
We also tried sea bream sashimi, then had the remaining fish fried. It was light and delicious. The shishito peppers had a sticky, sweet sauce and a little crunch that kept me reaching for more.
A complimentary dish
The restaurant brought us a smoked sea bream dish with mushrooms and truffle on the house. I loved the aroma when it was opened, and the mushroom-and-truffle combination tasted great with the fish.
How much was it?
- My original lunch plan: about $30.
- Our final meal total: $272.79 after tax, before tip.
I went in planning a small lunch and ended up wanting to taste much more. I thought the meal was worth it.

What would I order again?
The salmon and engawa would be my first picks. I also said I wanted to return for omakase and sit at the sushi bar. The food and service made this a meal I was excited to repeat.
