Alan’s Deli Houston Review: Crispy Pork Belly, Roast Duck & More

By · My firsthand restaurant visit

I’d been craving Chinese barbecue, especially after the crispy pork belly I tried at Baguettea. Y’all recommended Alan’s Deli, so Thomas and I headed to Bellaire Boulevard to get some barbecue. There weren’t tables to eat at during our visit, so we took our food to the car—and the meat was so good I barely touched my rice at first.

What I ordered and tasted

My plate had roasted pork, roasted duck, bok choy and white rice. I also tried pork ear, barbecue pork and pork knuckle during the meal.

Crispy roasted pork belly

The skin, fat and meat together made such a good bite. The skin was well seasoned with a crisp crunch, and the meat and fat worked beautifully together. This was exactly the kind of pork I’d been craving. I kept going back for more.

Roasted duck

This was a standout. I’ve had duck that was hard and chewy before, but this one was moist and delicious. I called it the best duck I’d ever had during the video. The juices served alongside it made me want another bite even after I said I was finished.

I casually called those juices “duck sauce” in the video, then admitted I wasn’t sure what the sauce was actually called. Whatever its name, I loved dipping the duck in it.

Pork ear

Thomas got pork ear, and I tried some. I liked the contrast between the gelatinous outside and crunchy middle. The seasoning was a little too salty for me, though, even with that texture I enjoyed.

Barbecue pork

I also tried the barbecue pork, or char siu, and liked its sweetness. It was another different flavor alongside the crispy roasted pork and duck.

Pork knuckle

I thought I was only going to have a bite, but this was hard to put down. It had that soft, gelatinous texture I love, and the seasoning came through all the way around. I really enjoyed how tender it was. This was another one I told y’all to try.

Bok choy and rice

The bok choy was simple, refreshing and delicious. My plate also came with white rice, but I was so focused on the meat that it took me a while to get to it.

How much was it?

  • 2 sides + 1 veggie combo: $13.50

This was the price during my visit. Check the current menu before you go, as prices can change.

What would I order again?

The crispy roasted pork and roasted duck would be my first picks, and I’d want that pork knuckle again too. The duck was so good I went back for another piece after I thought I was done. The pork ear was the one item that tasted too salty for my preference.
