Paris Baguette Houston Chinatown: My Honest Take on Three Pastries

By · My firsthand restaurant visit

I stopped at Paris Baguette on Bellaire after a viewer asked me to try it. The selection was huge and everything looked beautiful, so narrowing it down wasn’t easy. I chose three pastries, but the tasting was more mixed than the display had me expecting.

What I ordered

Very Berry pastry — 5/10

The berries drew me in. The cream had a fruity, tart flavor, and the custard didn’t taste as heavy as it looked. Some of the pastry was still crisp, but other parts were a little soggy. Overall, it was just okay for me.

Chocolate bretzel — 4/10

This was bread shaped like a pretzel with chocolate. The chocolate wasn’t overly sweet, but the bread was softer than I wanted. I prefer a crisp, toasted texture, so this one didn’t really hit the spot. I thought I might like it more freshly made.

Crème brûlée pastry — 5.5/10

I love crème brûlée, so I had to try this one. It had a shiny glaze, custard inside and some crunchy spots on top that reminded me of torched sugar. It scored a little higher than the other two, but it still wasn’t a standout for my taste.

How much was it?

What would I order again?

None of these three became a must-order for me. The crème brûlée pastry was my favorite of the group, but on another visit I’d be interested in trying something different. This was only a small sample of a very big pastry selection.
