Caracol Houston Review: Mexican Brunch Buffet & My Favorite Bites

By · My firsthand restaurant visit

I went to Caracol for its Mexican brunch buffet and left full, happy and very impressed by the desserts. The food looked beautiful, there was plenty to sample, and I had to remind myself to leave room for that tres leches cake.

What I ate

The egg-topped tostada

This was one of my favorite savory bites. The tortilla was crunchy, the egg yolk was rich, and everything on top worked together. That crunch was so satisfying. I would definitely put this on my plate again.

Beef cheek, Caesar salad and asparagus

The beef cheek barbacoa was tender and delicious. I also liked the Caesar salad, especially the cheese and the flavor of the dressing. The croutons were light and flavorful. The asparagus still had a nice crunch, too.

Tamale, chicken wing and fish

I picked a tamale without knowing which filling I’d get and ended up with zucchini. It was much sweeter than I expected—almost like a dessert tamale—even after I added salt and salsa. It wasn’t bad, just different from the meaty one I’d hoped for.

I also tried a buffalo-style chicken wing and the fish. I liked the fish’s sauce, which reminded me of buffalo sauce. And yes, if a buffet has chicken wings, I’m probably going to try them!

Ceviche and scallop shooters

The scallop shooters were mixed for me. The first had a fishy finish I didn’t enjoy; the next ones tasted better, but that first bite stayed with me. Of the ceviches, I preferred the one with fish, onion, tomato and radish. I liked the crunch from the radish.

The dessert plate

This was the part I was really looking forward to. The tres leches was spongy, creamy and milky—such a good dessert. I loved the toasted coconut macaroon, too. A little coconut with the tres leches made a really good combination.

I also tried the flan, chocolate cake and blueberry cheesecake. The flan and chocolate cake were good, but the tres leches and coconut were my standouts.

How much was Caracol’s brunch buffet?

The brunch buffet was about $46 per person during my January 2025 visit. Confirm the current buffet price, schedule and what is included before booking.

What would I order again?

The egg-topped tostada, tender beef cheek and fish ceviche would make my savory plate. Then I’d save plenty of room for the tres leches and coconut macaroon. I was disappointed there weren’t oysters that day, but overall I enjoyed the buffet and thought the quality was good.
