Kantaro Tokyo Station: Standing Sushi, Otoro & 25 Pieces for ¥6,740

By · My firsthand restaurant visit

This standing sushi bar inside Tokyo Station had me wanting to keep ordering. The fish tasted so fresh, the prices felt like a great value, and I could choose a smaller amount of rice with each piece. I ended up eating 25 pieces of sushi!

What I ordered

Otoro, salmon and young yellowtail

The otoro was soft and buttery, and I went back for it several times. Salmon is usually my favorite fish, and the salmon here was excellent, too. The young yellowtail was another one I wanted again after the first bite.

Uni and scallop

The uni was creamy without the strong ocean taste I sometimes notice. They gave me a generous amount, too. The scallop was juicy, sweet and soft—such a good bite.

Octopus and surf clam

Raw octopus had a chewy texture I really enjoyed. I also tried octopus head, which had a lovely crisp bite, and went back for more. The surf clam and surf-clam mantle were good for that satisfying texture, too.

Horse mackerel, sweet shrimp and more

I loved the ginger and scallion with the horse mackerel. It didn’t taste fishy to me, and the toppings worked beautifully with it. I also tried sweet shrimp, fluke, salmon roe and fatty salmon.

Thomas suggested the green-onion-sprout sushi, which wasn’t something I would have chosen on my own. It was better than I expected: mild rather than aggressively oniony, and nice with the rice.

How much was it?

  • My 25 pieces of sushi: ¥6,740 total in my October 2024 video
  • Unlimited hot green tea and fresh wasabi: Free of charge

¥6,740 is around US$43. The yen total is the amount from my visit; currency conversions and menu prices change.

What would I order again?

Otoro, salmon, uni and young yellowtail would be my first picks, followed by the horse mackerel and octopus head. I kept calling each round my last, then finding room for another piece. The combination of quality and price made this a standout stop for me in Tokyo.
