Soto Houston: Our Anniversary Omakase & the Sushi We Ordered Again

By · My firsthand restaurant visit

Thomas and I went to Soto to celebrate 17 years together. It was our first visit, and we chose the omakase, then kept ordering more because the food was that good. This was definitely a splurge, but the flavors, presentation and friendly staff made it a memorable anniversary meal.

What we ordered

The omakase

We chose the $150-per-person option, described as 18 courses during our visit. The opening oyster with toro was buttery and fresh. I liked the scallop with pickled cucumber, too—the tangy flavor and contrast worked so well together.

The salmon belly melted in my mouth, and the lobster tempura was still juicy inside its light batter. Every course had me looking forward to the next one.

Nigiri and the little details

What stood out was how each piece had its own toppings and seasoning. I didn’t need to reach for extra soy sauce. The tuna pieces were rich and fatty, the salmon was delicious, and I loved the attention given to even the smallest garnish.

One bite with salmon belly, a house-made potato chip and truffle was especially good. The chip was so light, and everything worked together. We also tried A5 beef seared briefly on a hot stone and a buttery foie gras course topped with chocolate.

Shishito peppers

These were so good that we ordered another serving. They still had texture and a little crispness, with a slightly sweet flavor. They were such an easy snack to keep eating between sushi bites.

The extra sushi

We added more sushi, including madai, spot prawn, salmon roe, salmon, tamago and hamachi. The spot prawn was a favorite: no chalky texture, just a really good bite. Its fried head was beautifully seasoned, too. We liked it enough to order another round.

The salmon roe was a little saltier than what we’d had in Japan, but still good with the rice. The tamago was sweet and fluffy, almost like a little pancake. I thought it would make a nice final bite, even though we couldn’t resist ordering more.

How much was it?

  • Our selected omakase: $150 per person
  • Our full meal with additional orders: over $600 after tip

Those were the prices from our December 2024 visit. The final bill included much more than the base omakase. Check the current menu and offerings before booking.

What would I order again?

The shishito peppers, spot prawn, salmon and hamachi would all be on my list. We literally ordered some of our favorites again during the same meal. Soto exceeded my expectations, and I’d keep it in mind for another special occasion.
