Jasmine Houston Review: Lemongrass Beef & Roll-Your-Own Spring Rolls

By · My firsthand restaurant visit

I used to go to Jasmine for spring rolls, but it had been four or five years since my last visit. Coming back reminded me how much I enjoy a meal like this: cook the meat, fill the rice paper with a little of everything, and try not to overstuff it. I failed at that last part!

What I Ordered

Lemongrass-Marinated Beef

The beef came covered in fragrant lemongrass, ready to cook at the table. I cooked all of mine first so I could focus on eating and rolling afterward. That lemongrass aroma was one of the best parts of the meal.

Bánh Hỏi and Vegetables

I ordered the steamed rice vermicelli separately, and I would not skip it. The noodles completed the rolls for me. We also had bean sprouts, cucumber, pickled carrots, lettuce, mint and other greens, so every roll could have a little crunch and a little freshness.

Rice Paper and Dipping Sauces

The rice paper was small, and I kept putting too much inside because I wanted everything in each bite. We had fish sauce and fermented shrimp paste for dipping. Neither sauce was quite right for my taste: the fish sauce was too strong, while I wanted the shrimp paste to be less diluted.

How Much Was It?

What Would I Order Again?

I would get the lemongrass beef with the noodles and greens again. The sauces were just okay for me, but the fragrant meat and all the different textures made this a meal I really enjoyed. It was a fun change from a rice or noodle plate.
