Bar-A BBQ & Blodgett Fish Market: Smoky Chicken, Brisket and a Longtime Favorite

By · My firsthand restaurant visit

This food day took me from barbecue in Montgomery to a Houston spot I’d been visiting for 17 years. Bar-A BBQ impressed me with juicy chicken and comforting sides, while Blodgett Fish Market brought back memories of eating fried chicken and fried rice during my University of Houston days.

What I ordered at Bar-A BBQ

Chicken and brisket

The ribs were sold out when we arrived, so we got chicken, brisket, jalapeño-cheese sausage, brisket Cajun rice and cornbread pudding.

The chicken had so much flavor that I didn’t need barbecue sauce. The deeper I got into it, the juicier it became—even the breast. I loved how the sweet marinade worked with the charred, smoky flavor.

The brisket had a good balance of fat and meat, with a smoky flavor I enjoyed. I’d already liked the sample, so I was happy to have more on the plate.

Sausage, rice and cornbread pudding

The jalapeño-cheese sausage had a little spice and wasn’t overly salty. I liked it with bread. The brisket Cajun rice tasted like comforting Southern food I could be eating at home.

The cornbread pudding was soft, gooey and warm. It actually ended up being my favorite thing there.

What I ordered at Blodgett Fish Market

Fried rice

I got the fried rice medium spicy, and it had a noticeable little kick. It needed soy sauce for my taste, but after adding some, I really enjoyed it. The onions were crunchy and sweet, and the rice wasn’t as greasy as I remembered.

For the meat choices, shrimp is my preference. I’ve found the other meat options dry, while the shrimp works better for me.

Fried shrimp and chicken

The butterfly shrimp were big, with crunchy batter that wasn’t too heavy. I dipped mine in ketchup.

The chicken had well-seasoned, crispy batter. The wing portion was my favorite, while part of the chicken was a little dry. It was still one of those meals that brought back a lot of memories.

How much was it?

The whole container with shrimp and rice was around $7 when I went, but prices may have changed. Refer to the menu for updated pricing.

What would I order again?

At Bar-A BBQ, I’d get the chicken and cornbread pudding again, and I’d like to try the ribs that were sold out. At Blodgett, I’d choose shrimp fried rice and the fried shrimp, with some of that crispy chicken as well.
