Kumo Sushi Houston: The Yellowtail Was My Favorite

By · My firsthand restaurant visit

I tried Kumo about three years before this visit and remembered being impressed by the fish. I came back hoping for that same experience, but this meal didn’t live up to it for me. There were a couple of dishes I enjoyed, especially the yellowtail, alongside several I wouldn’t rush to order again.

But please also understand everyone’s experience may be different depending on several variables such as time, day, chefs, etc. Sometimes I’ll go to the same exact restaurant and have two totally different experiences. Just keep this in mind 🙂

From my video published January 4, 2024.

What I ordered

Yellowtail and the first appetizers

The yellowtail hamachi was a lovely start: light, citrusy and delicious. The first salmon dish tasted a little fishy to me and reminded me more of smoked salmon than the fresh salmon flavor I expected. The tuna tataki was rubbery, and the spicy version didn’t change my mind about that texture.

Sashimi

The sashimi arrived in a pretty bowl over ice. I tried salmon, yellowtail, tuna, super white tuna, spicy tuna and octopus. Yellowtail was easily the best fish I ate here—creamy, buttery and so smooth.

The salmon sashimi was mostly buttery, but part of the bite was unexpectedly tough. The octopus was chewy, and I didn’t enjoy the texture of the spicy tuna.

Baked mussels

I liked the chewy texture of the mussels and the tangy spicy mayonnaise. With a little less mayo, these would have been even better for me. They were one of the more enjoyable dishes on my table.

Chicken hibachi

The chicken was very dry. I tried it with the hibachi sauce and then on its own, but it wasn’t something I enjoyed.

Sushi rolls

I ordered the Pink Lady roll with salmon, tuna, yellowtail and avocado wrapped in soy paper, along with a roll the waiter recommended that I later called the red snapper roll.

The red snapper roll wasn’t fishy to me, but there was so much unagi sauce and spicy mayonnaise that the other flavors got lost. If I ordered it again, I’d ask for the sauces on the side.

How much was it?

All-you-can-eat dinner: $28.95 per person in my January 2024 video. Check the current menu for today’s prices and options.

What would I get again?

The yellowtail would be my first choice. I also liked the baked mussels, though I’d prefer less spicy mayo. Overall, I left disappointed with several of the dishes I tried.

Maybe it was an off day. The menu was huge, and I didn’t try everything, so this is just my experience with my order. We all have different taste buds!
