Kura Houston: Sushi, a Robot Waiter & My Favorite Roll

By · My firsthand restaurant visit

I first went to Kura’s Houston location about ten years before this visit. Coming back to a robot delivering drinks, a touchscreen for ordering and sushi traveling around the restaurant felt like quite the upgrade.

The setup was fun, but I still wanted to know which plates were worth ordering. Ten plates later, the rolls were my favorites.

From my video published January 10, 2024.

What I ordered

Salmon belly and other nigiri

The salmon belly was buttery and didn’t taste fishy to me. The rice wasn’t soggy or overly vinegary, but there was more of it than I wanted with each piece of fish. That became a theme throughout the meal: I kept removing some rice to get the balance I like.

The regular salmon was a little tough compared with the belly. Salmon belly was the winner between those two. The yellowtail tasted better than it looked, while the piece sold as otoro was just okay to me, with a slightly fishy finish.

Yuzu sweet shrimp, garlic ponzu salmon and scallop

I liked the yuzu flavor on the sweet shrimp, although the shrimp had a slightly fishy taste at the end. The rice kept falling apart when I tried to pick it up. The garlic ponzu salmon mainly tasted like salmon with green onions to me.

The scallop was a 5/10 for me. It wasn’t fishy, but it didn’t have the sweetness I look for in a really good scallop. Again, I wanted less rice.

Salmon skin roll

This was my favorite thing here! I hadn’t planned to order rolls, but I was glad I changed my mind. The salmon skin, cucumber and pickled yamagobo worked really well together. I especially liked that crunchy, pickled bite with the fish.

Caterpillar roll

I finished with a caterpillar roll with unagi and asparagus inside, topped with avocado and unagi sauce. By the end, I realized I liked the rolls more than my raw fish choices.

How much was it?

I cannot remember to be honest, I think the prices varied depending on the color of the plate. Please call to confirm pricing as this may have changed.

What would I get again?

The salmon skin roll would be my first pick, and I’d choose salmon belly over the regular salmon nigiri. The rice portions were larger than I prefer, but the whole experience was entertaining.

The setting

The robot waiter brought drinks, and I ordered food on a touchscreen. Some plates arrived really quickly, although the roll arrival estimate on the screen wasn’t always accurate. At the time, every fifteen plates earned a little prize. I only made it to ten!

I thought kids would really enjoy choosing their food, watching the conveyor belt and working toward a prize. For me, that playful setup was a big part of the reason to visit.
