Lao’d District Houston Review: Sous Vide Steak & Papaya Salad with Blue Crab

By · My firsthand restaurant visit

I arrived at Lao’d District hungry and tired after a morning run. By the end of the meal, I was so happy with the food that I gave the experience a 10/10. This was one of those meals where I sometimes stopped talking because I was too busy enjoying it.

What I Ordered

Sous Vide Steak

The steak was incredibly tender—so soft that I compared it to butter. I loved the fatty bites, too. Sous vide is how I like to make steak at home, and I was excited to find a restaurant doing it this well. I could not think of a bad thing to say about that meat during my visit.

Papaya Salad with Blue Crab

I loved the crunch of the papaya and green beans. The dressing was a little sweet and very spicy, without the fermented flavor being too strong for me. That balance made it so good, although the heat definitely caught up with me!

Bread

The bread was light, buttery and good enough to enjoy by itself. I liked the accompanying sauce, too, but did not feel that the bread needed it.

How Much Was It?

What Would I Order Again?

The steak and papaya salad with blue crab would be my first picks. I loved everything I got during this visit, but that tender steak and the spicy, crunchy salad were the dishes I kept thinking about afterward.
