Hickory Hollow Houston: Chicken-Fried Steak, Crispy Okra & That Gravy
It had been about a decade since my last visit to Hickory Hollow. What I remembered was the portion size: even the small was huge. I went back for lunch to try the chicken-fried steak, and let me tell you, I still needed a to-go box.
What I ordered
Small chicken-fried steak
The coating was golden and crispy, and it kept that crunch even with gravy poured over it. The steak itself wasn’t where most of the flavor came from—the gravy was doing the work, and it was excellent. Creamy, savory and just right with those crispy edges.
They gave me extra gravy on the side, which I definitely used. To me, chicken-fried steak needs really good gravy to feel complete, and this had it. I don’t eat chicken-fried steak often, but out of the ones I’ve tried, this was the best I’d tasted.
Fried okra
I chose fried okra as one of my two sides. It was delicious and fit right in with this Southern comfort-food lunch.
Hot tots
My other side was the hot tots. I hadn’t had anything quite like them before: fried on the outside with an inside that reminded me of mashed potatoes. Think fried mashed-potato balls rather than the usual little tater tots.
How much was it?
- Small chicken-fried steak with two sides: $13.25
That was the price during my April 2025 visit. For the amount of food on the plate, I thought it was a good deal. Check the current menu before visiting, since prices can change.
What would I order again?
The chicken-fried steak with extra gravy. I loved dipping those crispy edges into it, and the fried okra would make my plate again, too. The small portion was already more than I could finish, so I wouldn’t need to size up.
