Sake Bon Houston: AYCE Sushi, Baked Mussels & Takoyaki

By · My firsthand restaurant visit

I visited Sake Bon on my own shortly after it opened, ready to try a little of everything. The menu gave me plenty of choices, and my server was friendly from the start. Some of the hot appetizers surprised me even more than the sushi.

From my video published September 27, 2025.

What I ordered

Baked mussels and takoyaki

The mussels came out hot and creamy, with little pops from the fish eggs and crunch from green onions. I loved them. The takoyaki were another highlight: not too doughy, with a good amount of octopus inside. Eat these while they’re hot!

Unagi and sashimi

The unagi wasn’t hot when it arrived, but it was soft, with a good amount of sauce and not too much rice. The salmon sashimi was delicious for an AYCE meal, and I enjoyed the yellowtail too. The octopus was chewy without tasting fishy.

The squid was the big miss. I found it chalky and starchy, and the texture got worse as I chewed. That was the one thing I’d skip next time.

Sushi appetizers and sides

I liked the fish and toppings on the garlic chili yellowtail, though its ponzu sauce was just okay to me. I preferred the white tuna truffle appetizer to the snapper jalapeño. The spicy kani salad was a solid combination of imitation crab, cucumber, fish eggs and dressing.

The spicy edamame was saucy and flavorful. I also liked the popping texture of the masago and tobiko served on cucumber.

Passion fruit tea and dessert

I ordered passion fruit tea without boba. It was okay, but a little watered down. I finished with Oreo tempura. It was okay. I’ve only had Oreo tempura one other time at JLB Eatery and it was AMAZING there. Sake Bon’s tasted a little old. I wouldn’t get it again. I’m not going to lie, I was a little disappointed.

How much was it?

  • Weekend AYCE dinner: $31.95 per person during my visit.
  • First non-alcoholic drink add-on: $1.99, under the offer shown then.
  • Additional drinks were listed at $4.95 each.

Check the current menu for prices and drink offers. I only estimated the lunch price in the video, so I’m not quoting it here.

What would I order again?

The baked mussels, takoyaki, salmon and white tuna truffle appetizer were standouts for me. Overall, I thought Sake Bon was a good AYCE visit, with the squid being the clear exception.
